Is make up necessary?

My last year's AP Drawing Portfolio.

I concentrated on using different colors or so-called make up on human faces. As a result, I toned down the skin color and used vibrant color for the make-up. However, the first drawing which was my last piece is very subtle with both make-up and skin tone. As far as I remember, I found it too cliché to draw monotoned skin and colorful make-up as the point. So I evened out the tone of the face and the make-up, and considered both of them as the main subject of the drawing.
